The first-ever lawn mower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Budding. This was a push lawn mower with five to eight spiral blades and it didn’t have a motor or anything to power it. Users had to push the mower for the blades to rotate. That means that if you stopped pushing the mower, it stopped cutting grass. Of course, these mowers were limited in their ability to cut and the lawns looked uneven after they were cut. Well, push mowers might have been useful during those days when there were no other options but today there are many more convenient mower options. In this post, we will be discussing the different types of lawn mowers:

Cylinder mowers

The cylinder mower is the equivalent of the modern push mower. They have similar designs, but the cylinder mower delivers more precise cuts than the push mower. A series of blades rotate inside the barrel. Like a push mower, this mower also has a stationary blade fixed at its rear. As the barrel turns and the blades rotate forward, grass that is exposed to it will be cut against the rear blade.

This type of mower is recommended for cutting short grass. If you mow your lawn every week, then a cylinder mower is the perfect option for you. But if you’ve not mowed your lawn in over a month, then you will want to use a more powerful rotary mower. The main advantage of a cylinder mower is that it is quieter and cheaper. So, you can be sure that you won’t disturb your neighbors if you like mowing early in the morning. Although the latest cylinder mowers have a motor inside, you can still find models that don’t have motors.

Rotary Mower

This is the most commonly used lawn mower today. Traditional rotary models use petrol which makes them more powerful. Basically, rotary mowers have horizontal blades that spin clockwise on the bottom. As you push this mower over the grass, the rotating blades will cut it. You don’t need to push the mower for the blades to spin because the mower is powered by petrol.

This makes its cutting power strong enough to cut longer grass. If you’ve not cut your grass for more than a month, then you will want to use a rotary mower. They can also mow lawns faster, which makes them more suitable for mowing large lawns.

There are many types of rotary lawn mowers on the market. But the most popular is the riding version and the push version. The riding version is ideal for people who don’t like pushing the mower. It has a horizontal blade at the bottom, but it may also come with multiple blades. Although these are the most expensive type of mowers, they are the most comfortable to use.

Electric Mowers

As the name suggests, these lawn mowers have motors that are powered by electricity. The main benefit of electric mowers is that they are cheaper to operate and lighter to push. They are of course not as powerful as rotary mowers because the electricity doesn’t deliver as much power to the rotating blades as petrol would. Electric mowers are ideal for small to medium-sized lawns. In addition to that, they cut lawns quietly, so you can be sure that you won’t cause any noise pollution in the neighborhood. The latest electric lawn mowers come with built-in batteries. This means that you don’t have to use an electric cord, which anyway limits mobility.

These batteries are charged the same way you charge your phone’s battery. You should be able to cut all the grass on a regular-sized lawn on a full battery.

Petrol Mowers

This type of mowers has been used for a very long time. They deliver more power than other types of mowers, making them ideal for cutting overgrown grass. The disadvantage of petrol mowers is that they are heavier. This means that pushing it around can be difficult if you are using the push-style petrol lawn mower. A number of the latest petrol mower models come with a self-propelling feature which basically reduces the effort required to cut the grass. If you have a big lawn, you will want to go for the self-propelled mower. Of course, this will require more petrol, but that should be expected from a mower that has been designed to drive and cut at the same time.

Generally, petrol mowers will not go out of style anytime soon since they deliver more power than other types of lawn mowers.

Hover Mowers

This is an advanced type of rotary push mower with spinning blades and an impeller above them. The role of the impeller is to push air downwards through the blades, making the mower to lift up off the ground. The blades are the only part of the mower that touches the grass. The rest of the mower unit floats in the air, thus making it easy to push it around.

However, mowers have a lightweight plastic body to make the lifting easier. Actually, the only part of the mower unit that weighs it down is the electric motor. The downside of these mowers is that they don’t cut well in rough terrain. However, you can use them on steep slopes and where there are many weeds.

Robotic mowers

This is another futuristic mower that many people are trying it out. As the name suggests, a robotic mower will mow the whole lawn all by itself. That means that you don’t need to control or monitor it. You simply need to place a border wire around the lawn. The robotic mower will be able to sense the boundaries and it will only cut grass where you want it to cut.

These types of lawn mower are great for people who don’t have enough time to do their lawn or have some kind of physical disability which makes it difficult to do certain tasks. The main downside of this mower is that it is expensive and not many people can afford it. However, if you are looking for a convenient way to mow your lawn without having to push the mower yourself, then this is a great option.
